CVYL 2025 REFEREE REQUIREMENTS
CVYL will be offering both training and assigning services for the Girls league this year. Please find important links for both at the bottom of this email. We are starting to be in a time crunch so please complete them promptly if your town is planning to take advantage of these services.
TOWNS RUNNING OWN TRAININGS:
Towns are NOT required at this time to use these services, but any town running their own trainings and assigning must use official US Lacrosse certified trainers, and all referees must be US lacrosse members similar to our coaches and players in our league. We are also requiring that all trainers/towns submit their list of trained officials with ratings and US lacrosse membership IDs following their training sessions to CVYL.
YELLOW SHIRT vs. STRIPED SHIRT OFFICIALS:
New this year, CVYL trained officials will follow a Yellow Shirt vs. Striped Official Model. We highly suggest towns conducting their own trainings to follow this model. It is not a requirement this first year, but will most likely be required for the 2026 season.
Yellow Shirts: Referees in yellow shirts with our CVYL logo are newer officials (1st or 2nd year). This helps all parties involved to identify and understand these individuals are learning to officiate.
*Please note there is a referee shortage so it is important we encourage these individuals and support them with the goal of having more striped officials in the years to come.
Striped Shirts: These individuals have earned their stripes and are experienced officials who should be equipped to keep the game safe especially at the junior and senior levels.
*Again, there is a referee shortage we still need to respect and support these officials as well.
CVYL REFEREE REQUIRMENTS:
According to US lacrosse Junior and Senior games can be played with junior (high school aged) officials. However, our league rule is that Senior girls' games may only play "full - transitional checking" if at least one adult official is present.
*NOTE: If a game becomes unsafe or gets out of hand, an adult official reserves the right to no longer continue the game with checking allowed. Further details will be sent on safety and cards before league play begins.
SENIOR GAMES:
*For the safety of our players and knowledge of the rules, we strongly encourage one adult referee at all Senior games, and NO new first-year "Yellow-Shirt" junior officials!
*When an adult official is present, teams can play full transitional checking.
*If an adult official is not present, Seniors must play modified checking below the shoulder, and we ask teams to reach out to opponents beforehand so they can plan accordingly.
JUNIOR GAMES:
*Recommended to have at least one striped official, but two yellow shirts can referee if absolutely necessary.
*Junior games are always modified checking below the shoulder no matter who is officiating.
BANTAM GAMES:
*Bantam level is NEVER allowed to check.
*Requires one official per game (striped or yellow shirt is fine).
CVYL FEES:
Individual Referee Fees for Junior and Senior Games:
Adult and Striped Officials: $75/game
Junior Yellow Shirt Officials: $50/game
*1.5 the normal fee per game if a referee ends up officiating alone for juniors or seniors only.
Individual Referee Fees for Bantam Games:
All officials no matter what level: $50/game
*Bantams only require one referee per bantam game. If there are two officials on one Bantam game, they will split the fee and be paid $25 each.
Assigning Fees:
Junior& Senior Level Teams: One-time $75 fee/team/season
Bantam Level Teams: One-time $50 fee/team/season

CVYL RULES REMINDERS
MERCY RULE:
This year CVYL will follow a 10 goal lead Mercy Rule.
*Any team down by 10 goals may request to receive the ball at the draw circle after every goal until the lead is less than 10.
*Coaches must make the request, the rule will not automatically be awarded
PLAYER CARDS:
If a player should be out of control and receive a card, please follow the guidelines below accordingly to US Lacrosse rules:
RED CARDS: Players MUST sit out the rest of the game as well as the next game (No Exceptions!). The players name must also be reported to the league by emailing our Vice President: giannaehrlich@gmail.com
Team plays down
YELLOW CARDS:
1st YELLOW CARD:
Player must sit out two minutes in penalty area of the sub box- teams play a player down during this time.
2nd YELLOW CARD for Same Player:
Player must sit out two minutes in penalty area of the sub box- teams play a player down during this time. That player may not return the of the game but may be replaced with another after two minutes.
4th YELLOW CARD BY TEAM: Team plays down the remainder of the game, and every card after removes an additional player. At this point the ref has the ability to call the game and the team with the excessive fouls may have to take forfeit.
COACHES CONDUCT:
As part of Safe Sport, coaches can also be suspended for games/the season for misconduct. If a coach shows unsportsmanlike conduct, we ask that they be reported to both Gianna and Brian Calandruccio (bcalandruccio32@gmail.com), our Sportsmanship Board Member.
Coaches are also responsible for ensuring sportsmanship among their fans. The yelling at and taunting of officials by anyone (coaches, fans, or players) will not be tolerated.
